The International Typeface Corporation (ITC) was founded in New York in 1970 by Aaron Burns, Herb Lubalin, and Edward Rondthaler. It was one of the first type foundries to emerge during the era of phototypesetting, transitioning away from traditional metal type production. ITC focused on designing, licensing, and marketing typefaces that were compatible with modern technologies like filmsetting and eventually digital typesetting.

ITC became known for producing both original type designs and revivals of classic fonts, often adapted for contemporary use and available in comprehensive families of weights. Notable designers associated with ITC include Ed Benguiat, who created iconic fonts such as ITC Benguiat, ITC Souvenir, and Tiffany. These designs gained widespread popularity in advertising, publishing, and branding, solidifying ITC’s influence on modern typography.

A key part of ITC’s legacy is the publication of U&lc (Upper & lower case), a journal that ran from 1973 to 1999. It highlighted typographic innovations, design trends, and the industry’s transition into the digital era, making it an essential resource for graphic designers. ITC’s fonts, such as ITC Avant Garde Gothic, ITC Garamond, and ITC Franklin Gothic, became staples in the design world, used in logos, publications, and branding projects worldwide.

In 2000, ITC was acquired by Agfa Monotype (now Monotype Imaging), which continues to preserve and distribute its extensive font library. ITC’s work has left a lasting mark on both the history of typography and the development of digital type technologies.
