William Caslon, an English punchcutter active from 1720 to 1766, revolutionized type design by crafting roman, italic, and non-Latin typefaces inspired by Dutch styles but uniquely refined. His roman type gained fame as the “script of kings” and was notably used for the U.S. Declaration of Independence in 1776. Caslon’s typefaces are recognized for their timeless appeal, featuring distinctive traits like a scooped apex in the capital “A,” full serifs on the capital “C,” and swashed lowercase “v” and “w” in the italic. Revered for their reliability, Caslon’s designs have inspired countless adaptations, including Caslon Black by Dave Farey for ITC.
