William Caslon (1692–1766) was an English typefounder and engraver who profoundly influenced the history of typography. Caslon established his reputation in 1720 with the creation of a typeface that blended classical proportions with a distinctive yet readable style, marking a significant departure from the heavily ornamental Baroque typefaces of the time. His work was inspired by Dutch types but incorporated a refined elegance that made it uniquely his own.

Caslon’s typefaces quickly gained popularity due to their clarity and versatility, becoming widely used in books, newspapers, and official documents. Notably, the first printed version of the U.S. Declaration of Independence was set in Caslon type. His designs, particularly the typeface now known as Caslon Old Style, remain iconic and are still in use today.
