Adobe‘s connection to typography is deeply rooted in its history, starting with the company’s foundation in 1982 by John Warnock and Charles Geschke. Their initial focus was on PostScript, a revolutionary page description language that allowed scalable, high-quality rendering of type and graphics. This innovation formed the backbone of early desktop publishing, particularly when paired with Apple’s Macintosh computers and LaserWriter printers, which debuted in 1985. PostScript allowed for device-independent communication between computers and printers, eliminating the need for proprietary typesetting systems and marking a turning point in the publishing industry.

Adobe also contributed significantly to the evolution of digital fonts. The company introduced Type 1 fonts as part of the PostScript ecosystem, competing with Apple’s TrueType format in the late 1980s. Although TrueType became a standard for consumer use, Adobe’s Type 1 fonts maintained dominance in professional publishing. In 1996, Adobe collaborated with Microsoft to develop the OpenType font format, which supported expanded character sets and advanced typographic features. By 2003, Adobe had fully converted its font library to OpenType.

A major milestone in Adobe’s typographic journey was the establishment of the Adobe Originals program in 1989. This initiative aimed to create high-quality typefaces optimized for digital use, with renowned designers like Robert Slimbach and Carol Twombly contributing iconic fonts such as Adobe Garamond and Myriad. These typefaces remain widely used in design and publishing, reinforcing Adobe’s reputation as a leader in typography.

Today, Adobe Fonts (formerly Typekit) continues to play a pivotal role in digital design, offering a vast library of fonts as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. This integration supports seamless font usage across platforms and tools, catering to both professional designers and casual users alike.
