The Sydney 2000 Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXVII Olympiad, were held in Sydney, Australia from September 15 to October 1, 2000. The Games were the first to be held in the Southern Hemisphere, and were widely regarded as a success for their organization and atmosphere. The opening ceremony, which featured a dramatic display of Australian culture and history, including the famous “dancing aboriginals” segment, was watched by an estimated 3.7 billion people worldwide. The Games featured a record number of athletes, with over 10,000 competitors from 199 countries participating in 28 sports. The United States won the most medals overall, with 93, while Australia finished fourth in the medal table with 58 medals, including 16 golds. The Sydney Games were also notable for several memorable sporting moments, such as Cathy Freeman’s gold medal win in the women’s 400 meters, and the surprise victory of Eric “The Eel” Moussambani of Equatorial Guinea in the men’s 100 meters freestyle swimming event.
