Payless Shoe Source

Cooper Black by Linotype is a font based on the Payless Shoe Source logo.

Cooper is a playful, rounded serif typeface designed by Oswald Bruce Cooper in 1921. Known for its friendly and approachable appearance, Cooper features soft, rounded edges and wide proportions, making it highly legible and easy to read. Its charming, informal style has made it popular for advertising, signage, and display purposes. The font’s distinctive look blends traditional serif elements with a more casual, modern feel, giving it a unique and inviting character. Various versions of Cooper have been created over the years, including Cooper Black, which became particularly famous for its bold, retro appeal.

Payless, founded in 1956 in Topeka, Kansas, became a leading American footwear retailer known for its affordable and stylish shoes. Catering to families, it offered a wide range of footwear for men, women, and children, along with accessories like handbags and socks. Payless pioneered a self-service model, allowing customers to browse and try on shoes independently, which contributed to its success. At its peak, the company operated thousands of stores globally, including locations in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America. Despite its popularity, financial challenges led to bankruptcy filings in 2017 and 2019, resulting in the closure of its U.S. stores. However, Payless later rebranded and relaunched in 2020, focusing on e-commerce and international markets to revive its iconic brand and reach new customers.
