Metallica is one of the most influential and successful heavy metal bands of all time, known for shaping the thrash metal genre and achieving worldwide acclaim. Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield, the band’s lineup stabilized with guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Cliff Burton, later replaced by Jason Newsted and subsequently Robert Trujillo. Metallica’s early albums, such as Kill ’Em All (1983), Ride the Lightning (1984), and Master of Puppets (1986), are thrash metal milestones, showcasing fast tempos, intricate guitar riffs, and socially charged lyrics.

The 1991 self-titled album, often called The Black Album, marked a stylistic shift with its polished production and more mainstream appeal, featuring hits like “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters.” It catapulted the band to global stardom. Known for their intense live performances, Metallica continues to innovate with albums like Death Magnetic (2008) and 72 Seasons (2023).

The band has won multiple Grammy Awards, sold over 125 million records worldwide, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. Despite internal struggles, including the death of Cliff Burton in 1986 and public disputes, Metallica has remained a powerhouse in heavy metal, continually evolving while staying true to their roots.
